I offer to others, my way of seeing and thinking about nature. – Ian Armstrong 1979.
Art consumed the life of modernist painter, drawer, printmaker and sculptor Ian Armstrong (1923–2005). A student of art for his entire lifetime, he drew inspiration from modernist George Bell. He studied life drawing with John Berger in England during the 1950s and printmaking with Pierre Jonquieres in France during the 1980s.
Recognised as an exhilarating young artist and a most accomplished craftsman of great talent, Ian Armstrong’s work is represented in the Australian National Gallery, the National Gallery of Victoria and in many collections throughout Australia. A resident of Blackburn for more than 30 years, the artist’s works are also represented in the Whitehorse Art Collection.
