Town Hall Open Day - a great success
The Box Hill Town Hall open day was held on Saturday 31 March 2008, drawing more than 1500 people to explore the magnificent Whitehorse landmark following its recent $6.5 million redevelopment.
The day started with the unveiling of a specially engraved Wurundjeri Welcome rock 'Womin-Je-Ka' by Senior Wurundjeri Elder, Joy Wandin-Murphy and Whitehorse Mayor, Cr. John Koutras. The rock acknowledges the Wurundjeri people as the traditional owners of this land and pays respect to their elders past and present . The ceremony was accompanied by a traditional smoking ceremony conducted by Wurundjeri Elder Doreen Garvey.
Cr. Koutras said the open day provided a special opportunity for people to explore the iconic Box Hill Town Hall building, which is treasured by our community.
"Highlights of the day included heritage tours, which explained the history of the Town Hall and showcased a range of historical artefacts collected by Council, some on display for the first time. The Town Hall Council Chambers were opened up to the public. The magnificent Main Hall, function rooms and customer service centre were also opened for the community to discover," he said.
"The Art Space attracted many visitors, Council showcased heritage works in the City of Whitehorse Art Collection, including works by E Phillips Fox and Arthur Streeton."
Cr Koutras said the Town Hall Hub was now the home to 15 community groups, and many of the tenants showcased their services and provided entertainment during the open day.
"The Town Hall provides a real focal point for these groups to connect with the community as they provide many services and activities that encourage involvement and participation" he said.
