Extended Families Australia

Extended families Australia provides opportunities for mature aged people to develop loving and caring ‘grandparent’ relationships with children who have a disability. Originally established in 1978 as the Foster Grandparents Scheme, Extended Families match a volunteer with a child, providing valuable support for the child and his or her family through regular visits. There are many children who have a disability and who could benefit from the love and life experience that a regularly visiting foster grandparent can offer. Children with disabilities, who often have the highest needs, also have the lowest amount of resources available to them and Extended Families Australia believes that senior members of the community have a valuable contribution to make and matches the family to the skills of the volunteer. Special Olympics Victoria

Special Olympics Victoria (SOV) is part of a national not for profit organisation serving the nearly 500,000 people with intellectual disabilities in Australia. Special Olympics is not just one single event. It is ongoing year-round training and competition for people with an intellectual disability. Every day around the world, Special Olympics athletes are training and competing at all levels, regional, state, national and International. SOV is a volunteer driven organisation providing governance and support for the volunteers who deliver sports training, provide coaching, support athletes and stage regional and state competitions. Special Olympics play an integral role in the development of voluntary activity and volunteering in Victoria. We are further developing programs to recruit, train and reward our volunteers. SOV exists to serve the athletes for whom we offer sports training, participation opportunities and competition at all levels. Over the next four years we intend to extend our coverage to areas that have not had the opportunity to be involved and to appreciate the benefits offered by Special Olympics. In Victoria we offer community sport programs through our 11 regions. These sports include athletics, aquatics, basketball, gymnastics, softball and ten pin bowling and are aimed at different age groups and different levels of ability. We include team and individual, summer and winter, indoor and outdoor sports. For many the training sessions are a way of participating in a community activity and are a means in themselves. For others, the opportunity to compete at a level appropriate to their ability is an important part of their fulfilment. Top
