Responding to the landscape of Box Hill and surrounds, Exit and Return is, in part a re-framing of the area’s historical connection to the Australian Impressionists. Grennan reconsiders the 19th Century narrative of being “lost” in the Australian bush, as epitomised in McCubbin’s Lost 1886. The artist mediates this space via various human presences and absences in the bush setting.
Artist and lecturer Simon Grennan teaches painting, drawing, printmaking and contemporary art practice at Deakin University. His work will be exhibited alongside heritage impressionist works form the Whitehorse Art Collection.
